Ausewell Woods Walk

Our Ausewell walk is a 1.9km woodland route, with a longer 3.2km option if you want to stretch the day out a little further. It is rated 1 out of 3 for difficulty, so it sits firmly in the easier end of the collection. The terrain is woodland throughout, with natural paths and the usual roots, leaves and uneven ground you would expect under the trees.

This is a good one for families who want something manageable without losing that proper woodland feel. The shorter distance makes it handy for younger legs, while the extended option gives you a bit more if everyone is still happily wandering.

Ausewell woods has that tucked away Dartmoor feel where the trees do most of the work. You get birdsong, changing light through the canopy and plenty of little things for children to notice without needing a huge landmark at the end.

It is especially useful when the open moor feels a bit too exposed, or when you simply fancy a quieter woodland day with less distance and less faff.

The food and drink stop:

Brewhub Buckfastleigh cafe page with a coffee truck in a stone venue, warm string lights, map button, and Dartmoor Partner branding.

After the walk, head to Dartmoor Lodge at Peartree Cross, Ashburton.

Dartmoor Lodge is one of our hospitality partners and sits right on the edge of South Dartmoor. The hotel is currently going through a major refurbishment, but The Little Lodge is open daily as its bar and dining space, serving food and drinks with weekend specials too.

That makes it an easy pairing with Ausewell. You can keep the walk short and simple, then head somewhere warm for lunch, a drink or something more substantial without turning the whole day into a big mission.

The hotel also has family rooms, dog friendly credentials and outdoor areas, so it works well for families using this side of Dartmoor as a base as well as for people simply stopping in after a walk.
