The Harford Moor walk:

Our Harford walk is a peaceful open moorland adventure with a gentle, tucked away feel.

It starts quietly, then opens into wide views, grassy slopes and that lovely sense of Dartmoor space without feeling too big or intimidating. It is a brilliant choice for families who want something short, memorable and properly outdoorsy, with enough interest to keep children moving without turning the day into a long slog.

There is a real sense of age in the landscape here, with Bronze Age remnants, signs of old quarrying and little clues of Dartmoor’s working past. It is the kind of place where children can spot shapes in the rocks, look for ancient hut circles, listen for water and feel like they are exploring somewhere with a story.

Butterbrook adds a playful little moment to the walk, with water, stepping stones and the usual family debate about who has the best balance. The moorland here can feel wild and peaceful all at once, which makes it a lovely option for a morning stretch of legs before coffee, or a slow family wander when you want views, history and a bit of splashing without overcomplicating things.

Mobile signal can be patchy around this area, so members should open or download the route before setting off.

The food and drink stop:

Hettie’s Coffee Shop page with colorful flowers outside a café, address in Ivybridge, and a yellow Map button.

After the walk, head to Hettie’s Coffee Shop in Ivybridge.

This is not really a lunch or dinner pairing. It works best as an early morning coffee stop before heading out, or as a post walk cake and coffee stop when everyone is ready for something warm, sweet or quietly restoring.

Hettie’s is an independent coffee shop on Fore Street in Ivybridge, with a friendly local feel and a good mix of coffee, treats and lighter café bits. It is a handy pairing for Harford because Ivybridge gives you an easy town stop close to the southern edge of Dartmoor, without needing to turn the day into a full pub meal plan.

This is the one for families who want a simple morning out. Coffee first, moorland second, or walk first, cake after. Either way, it keeps the day easy.

Think muddy boots, warm drinks, something sweet for the children, and a gentle little Dartmoor plan that does not need much brain power.
