Great Mis Tor Walk and The Plume of Feathers, Princetown

Great Mis Tor family walk on Dartmoor with route key

Great Mis Tor Walk

Great Mis Tor is a proper Dartmoor outing, with a steady climb, huge skies and the kind of open moorland that makes the walk feel bigger than the distance suggests. The full return is just under 5km, but the gradual ascent means this one earns its Trek rating.

The first target is Little Mis Tor, which works brilliantly as a shorter family option if little legs are done. Keep going and the landscape opens out even more as Great Mis Tor grows ahead of you, with rougher granite underfoot and weathered rock formations around the summit area.

This is less about scrambling and more about the steady effort of getting there. The track is established for much of the route, but the climb keeps coming and the summit area is exposed. There is no need to clamber onto the highest rocks to get the views or enjoy the granite.

Great Mis Tor sits beside the Merrivale military training area, so checking the official firing programme before setting off is essential. Bring layers, food, water and a saved route, and allow more time than the distance alone might suggest.

The food and drink stop:

The Plume of Feathers pub in Princetown on Dartmoor

After the walk, head into Princetown for The Plume of Feathers.

It is a useful central Dartmoor stop when you want somewhere warm, straightforward and easy after a long stretch of open moorland. Princetown is only a short drive away, so it works naturally with Great Mis Tor without turning the rest of the day into another mission.

The Plume works well for proper pub food, a drink and a sit down after the climb. The menu covers familiar favourites, while the bar has a good mix of local and well known beers, including Dartmoor Brewery.

This pairing is a good one when you want the walk to feel wild and open, but the finish to feel simple. Granite, wind and big views first, then food and a pint in Princetown afterwards.
