Pew Tor walk and The Dartmoor Inn

Wide green moorland hills under blue sky, with a small pond and a yellow side key labeled KEY and 2.

The Pew Tor walk:

Our Pew Tor walk is a proper open Dartmoor outing, with big skies, granite shapes and that brilliant feeling of space you get around Pork Hill and Merrivale.

This is one for families who want the walk to feel a little more wild without tipping into a huge mission. Pew Tor has that classic Dartmoor mix of open moorland, scattered granite, grazing ponies, little streams to splash in, and views that make everyone stop for a moment, even if someone is still asking for snacks.

It is a lovely choice when you want a walk with a bit of drama. The landscape feels wide and exposed, but the tor gives children something clear to aim for and explore around. It has that satisfying “we made it” feeling, without needing the whole day to become a route march.

Expect open ground, uneven paths, moorland weather and very little shelter. On a clear day, this one feels big and beautiful. On a windy day, it feels very Dartmoor indeed. Bring layers, decent footwear and a bit of patience for the usual faff that comes with getting everyone across the moor.

The food and drink stop:

After the walk, head to The Dartmoor Inn at Merrivale.

It sits in a brilliant spot for this part of Dartmoor, close to Pew Tor, Foggintor Quarry, Sherberton Stepping Stones and some of the moor’s most open, atmospheric landscapes. It is the kind of place that feels made for a post walk stop, especially after time out in the wind and wide open space.

The Dartmoor Inn has a strong food focus, with fire cooked dining, seasonal produce and proper Dartmoor hospitality at the heart of it. It works well for lunch, dinner, drinks or even an overnight stay if you are making more of the area.

This is a great pairing if you want the walk to feel open and adventurous, but the stop afterwards to feel warm, polished and a little bit special. Think muddy boots, moorland cheeks, good food, local ingredients and the relief of sitting down somewhere that knows exactly what walkers need after being out on Dartmoor.
