Hembury Woods Walk and Brew Hub

Hembury Woods Walk
Our Hembury Woods walk is a 2.8km family route, with a 3.7km extended option if everyone still has some energy left. It is an easy woodland adventure overall, although there are steep steps and slopes in places and the paths can be uneven underfoot. The river sits downhill from the car park, so remember there is a climb back up at the end.
Hembury is brilliant when you want a walk that feels adventurous without heading onto the open moor. Ancient woodland, huge trees, mossy banks and the River Dart give children plenty to explore, while the heavy canopy makes it a lovely option on warmer days.
The river is a big part of the fun here. There are places for riverside snacks, paddling and swimming, with clear water running beneath the trees. Keep an eye out for dippers and grey wagtails around the water, and you may even get lucky with a kingfisher.
There are plenty of ways to adapt the day too. You can keep things short and follow one of the woodland paths back towards the car park, or continue with our longer route beside the river and around the edge of the woods.
It is a proper little woodland adventure, without needing the whole day to revolve around walking.
The food and drink stop:

Afterwards, Brewhub in Buckfastleigh is only around a 7 minute drive away.
Brewhub is an independent café on Mardle Way serving coffee, tea and simple food, with the option to eat in or grab something to take away. There is free parking too, which makes it particularly handy when everyone has reached the post walk stage of needing food immediately.
It is a relaxed, easy stop rather than somewhere you need to plan the whole day around. Dogs are welcome in the indoor and outdoor areas, and there is accessible parking, an accessible entrance and accessible toilets.
This pairing works because it keeps everything simple. Woodland, river exploring and perhaps a swim first, then a short drive into Buckfastleigh for coffee and something to eat.
