Shaugh Prior walk and the Royal Oak in Meavy

The Shaugh Prior walk:

Our Shaugh Prior walk is a satisfying woodland wander with rivers, old oak trees and a quiet sense of Dartmoor history running through it.

This is a lovely choice when you want something that feels properly green and tucked away, but still gives children plenty to notice. The woods are full of texture, with mossy clearings, granite boulders, birdsong, old trees and the constant sound of water moving through the valley.

There is a small uphill section, but it pays you back with views across the tree canopy and that brilliant feeling of being up among the oaks. It feels adventurous without being too much, with just enough climb, splash and wander to make it feel like a proper family outing.

The old granite tramway gives the walk its rugged character. Granite sleepers still mark parts of the route, a reminder of the days when stone was hauled down from the quarries nearby. Spring brings bluebells, autumn brings colour, and even on a damp day the woodland has that soft, mossy magic that makes this corner of Dartmoor feel quietly special.

After the walk, head to The Royal Oak Inn in Meavy.

The Royal Oak sits in the heart of Meavy, a lovely village base for the western and south western edge of Dartmoor. It works especially well after Shaugh Prior because it keeps the day feeling local, calm and properly Dartmoor, without needing to drive off in search of somewhere bigger or busier.

This is a good old village pub pairing. Food, drinks, pints, outdoor space and that classic post walk feeling of muddy boots, tired legs and everyone being much happier once something cold, warm or snack shaped appears.

Meavy itself adds to the charm. It is the kind of village stop that makes the whole day feel rounded, especially after time in the woods and rivers. A woodland wander, a proper pub, and no need to overthink the plan.
