Castle Inn, Lydford

Castle Inn Lydford sits in the historic village of Lydford, close to the western edge of Dartmoor and just a short walk from the entrance to Lydford Gorge.

This is an award winning 16th century Devonshire inn with proper old pub character, low ceilings, wonky walls, open fires and plenty of charm. Set just off the A30 between Okehampton and Tavistock, it is easy to reach but still feels rooted in one of Dartmoor’s most atmospheric villages. The inn has a main bar, snug, restaurant, heated and lit stretch tent, large gardens and thirteen bedrooms for those turning a Dartmoor day into a longer stay.

Food and drink are a big part of the appeal here. The menu focuses on pub classics and British favourites, with an emphasis on making good use of local produce from the surrounding area. In winter, it is the kind of place that suits muddy boots, warm fires and a proper meal after time outside. In warmer months, the gardens make it easy to slow down after a walk, especially if the day has involved Lydford Gorge, open moorland or the wider north west Dartmoor area.
