Crazy Well Pool family walk on Dartmoor with route key

Crazy Well Pool Walk

The Crazy Well Pool walk combines several very different Dartmoor features in one manageable route. The base walk is 4.75km and rated A Trek 2/3, with maintained tracks, open moorland, rocky sections and a return beside the historic Devonport Leat.

Crazy Well Pool provides the main destination on the outward section, with wide views towards Burrator on the approach. The pool has plenty of folklore attached to it, but from a family planning point of view the more useful detail is the terrain: mostly straightforward tracks with some uneven and rocky sections where children may need to slow down.

The return beside Devonport Leat is gentler and gives the second half of the walk a very different feel. The leat was built in the late eighteenth century to carry water towards Plymouth Dockyard, so there is a clear historical feature running through the route rather than simply another moorland track.

If you want more, the Cramber Tor extension increases the total to around 6.6km. Members can open the full Crazy Well Pool route for both mapped options, parking, GPS navigation and the practical notes for the more exposed sections.

The food and drink stop:

Cafe interior with wooden tables and service counter

Fox Tor Cafe is in Princetown and is one of the most convenient food stops for this part of the central moor.

It serves hot drinks, lunch and straightforward cafe food, so it works equally well after the 4.75km route or the longer Cramber Tor version.

Princetown also gives you parking, shops and other facilities nearby. That is useful after a walk where the route itself has very little shelter or infrastructure.

Use the cafe button for the current venue information, and the route button when you want the complete Crazy Well Pool map and member planning details.
