Huccaby Steps Walk and Holne Tea Rooms

Huccaby Steps Walk
The Huccaby Steps walk is only 1.3km return, rated A Doddle 1/3, but the river gives families far more to do than the distance suggests. The route uses a woodland path to reach Week Ford and the granite stepping stones.
The path can be muddy and overgrown, with a couple of stiles and uneven ground close to the river. That makes a carrier more practical than a buggy or balance bike, even though the actual walking distance is short.
At Week Ford, the grassy bank and stepping stones create the main stopping point. Crossing the stones is completely optional and should only be considered when water levels and conditions are suitable. The near bank already gives plenty of space for a picnic and time by the water.
Paddling may be possible in suitable conditions, but the river always needs to be assessed on the day. Members can open the full Huccaby Steps route for the exact start, parking, GPS navigation and the river safety notes before travelling.
The food and drink stop:

Holne Tea Rooms works well with Huccaby because Holne sits naturally on the way through this part of south Dartmoor.
Breakfast is served from 10am to 12pm and lunch from 12pm to 3.30pm, with cakes and cream teas available through the day.
That flexibility is useful because a 1.3km route can still turn into a much longer river stop if children want to stay by the water.
