The Penstave Copse walk:
Our Penstave Copse walk is one of those quiet little woodland adventures that feels hidden from the rest of the world.
Ancient oak and beech trees, wild garlic in spring, mossy ground and the River Avon running below give this one a really soft, green feel. In summer the canopy keeps things cool and shady, while the river adds that extra bit of fun with sandy patches, clear pools and plenty of barefoot paddle potential.
It is a lovely choice for families who like a walk with a bit of texture. Narrow woodland trails, roots, boulders, stepping logs and little scrambly moments make it feel adventurous without needing a huge distance.
This is not a big open moorland walk. It is more tucked away, leafy and intimate, with birdsong, water and that proper woodland smell after rain. A good one for warmer days, smaller adventures and children who like exploring as much as walking.
The food and drink stop:
After the walk, head to The Bull Inn in Totnes, around a 15 minute drive away.
The Bull is an organic, ethical pub and hotel at the top of Totnes High Street, overlooking Rotherfold Square. It serves seasonal breakfasts, lunch and dinner, with a strong focus on organic produce, local suppliers and thoughtful sourcing.
It has a really different feel from a traditional Dartmoor village pub, which is exactly why this pairing works. You go from shaded woodland and river exploring into Totnes for good food, organic beer, a short wine list and a lively town finish.
The Bull is open seven days a week from 8am until late, with food served across breakfast, lunch and dinner periods, so it gives you plenty of flexibility depending on whether you want to start with breakfast, finish with lunch or make more of the day in Totnes.
