Longtimber Woods walk beside the River Erme in Ivybridge

Longtimber Woods Walk

Our Longtimber Woods walk is a 2km woodland and riverside route beside the River Erme, rated 2 out of 3 for difficulty. It is suitable for off road buggies and carriers, while confident balance bike riders can manage the flatter sections. There are rocky and uneven patches under the trees, plus a steep hill at the start and finish, so it still feels like a proper little outing.

This is a lovely one when you want children to have plenty to do without needing a huge distance. Fallen trunks, picnic spots, mossy banks and the river keep things interesting, and there are pools where families often paddle or dip when conditions are right.

Longtimber feels surprisingly tucked away considering Ivybridge is right beside it. The railway viaduct, broadleaf woodland and constant sound of the River Erme give the route loads of character, while dippers, grey wagtails, mossy boulders and spring bluebells give everyone something to spot.

There is some lovely local history here too, including the remains of an old river fed swimming pool once used by Ivybridge families. It makes Longtimber a good all year choice when the open moor feels too exposed, or when you just fancy shade, water and woodland without loads of faff.

The food and drink stop:

Fowlescombe Farm near Ugborough on the southern edge of Dartmoor

After the walk, head to Fowlescombe Farm near Ugborough, roughly a 15 minute drive from Longtimber Woods.

Fowlescombe Farm is one of our hospitality partners and sits across 450 acres of regenerative farmland on the southern edge of Dartmoor. Food is a huge part of what they do here, with Executive Chef Elly Wentworth and the kitchen team building menus around produce grown and raised on the farm.

The Refectory is the food destination here, with a four course set dinner shaped by whatever the gardens, fields and farm are producing. A small number of tables are kept for non residents each evening, so this is one to book rather than wing it.

It makes this pairing feel a little more special than our usual walk and pub combination. Longtimber gives you an easy family woodland adventure first, then Fowlescombe turns the food stop into the main event.
